چکیده

The delay per unit length of on-chip wires, as determined by a diffusive RC-limited response and as measured relative to gate delays, approximately doubles every technology generation as wire resistances per unit length increase and gate delays decrease with scaling. Furthermore, these wire delays (D) grow quadratically with wire length, D ° RwireCwireL. Wire bandwidths, which are inversely proportional to D, degrade.

On-chip Global Interconnects for Networking ASICs-white paper

While serial transceivers move data in and out of an ASIC, on-chip global interconnects move data inside the ASIC. These global interconnects include crossbar switches and busses for sharing on-chip resources. To guarantee quality of service, the on-chip global interconnects are often designed to carry several times worth of traffic compared to the serial transceivers. Close to 10 Tb/s is not a...

Electrical interconnects revitalized

Models of electrical interconnects, including inductance and skin effect, are reviewed. The models are used for estimating the performance of electrical interconnects, particularly related to delays, data rates, and power consumption for off-chip and on-chip interconnects and for clock distribution. It is demonstrated that correctly utilized, electrical interconnects do not severely limit chip ...

Trends in Emerging On-Chip Interconnect Technologies

In deep submicron (DSM) VLSI technologies, it is becoming increasingly harder for a copper based electrical interconnect fabric to satisfy the multiple design requirements of delay, power, bandwidth, and delay uncertainty. This is because electrical interconnects are becoming increasingly susceptible to parasitic resistance and capacitance with shrinking process technology and rising clock freq...

Chip-to-Chip and On-Chip Communications

In high-performance integrated circuits manufactured in CMOS deep sub-micron technology, the speed of global information exchange on the chip has developed into a bottleneck, that limits the effective information processing speed. This is caused by standard on-chip communication based on multi-conductor interconnects, e.g., implemented as parallel interconnect buses. The supported clock frequen...

Testing Interconnects in a System Chip

Testing of interconnects on a printed circuit board has been studied and the procedure has been standardized in the IEEE 1149.1 (JTAG) standard. The Sysem-on-Chip (SOC) technology allows us to integrate on the same chip, most of the electronics on a PCB. However, since an SOC operates at a much higher speed and has a very large packaging density, testing its interconnects is different. For exam...

Efficient High-Speed On-Chip Global Interconnects

The continuous miniaturization of integrated circuits has opened the path towards System-on-Chip realizations. Process shrinking into the nanometer regime improves transistor performance while the delay of global interconnects, connecting circuit blocks separated by a long distance, significantly increases. In fact, global interconnects extending across a full chip can have a delay correspondin...
